Class Descriptions for 2019-2020 Season

It is very common for dancers to stay at the same level for two or three years before moving up. The ages listed next to each class is the average age of entry, but dancers will be evaluated by the teacher and placed according to their appropriate level. 

Ballet 1 (5+ yrs) w/ Mercedes

This class is suitable for beginners and will cover the fundamentals of classical ballet technique. The importance of strength, flexibility, rhythm, musicality, and memorization will be stressed. Basics of performing will be introduced. It is recommended that students have taken Pre Ballet but it is not required. Girls should wear a solid colored leotard, black or pink tights and pink ballet slippers. Boys should wear a white shirt, black leggings, and black ballet slippers. If a dancer does not follow the dress code they will not be able to participate in class time.

Ballet 2A (7+ yrs) w/ Mercedes

For dancers who wish to dive deeper into what ballet has to offer.  We will be working on glissade, sous-sus, echape jumps to second and back to fifth, entrechat-quatre, pas de chat, pique turns, chaines, saute in first arabesque position, changement en tournant, promenade in first arabesque, turn from fifth position, bouree across the floor with pas de bouree in between, arm movements through low first to middle and up high.  Occasionally we will devote time at the end of a class to watch a video of spectacular dancers from around the world.  Dancers should arrive to class on time with their hair up in a tight bun (or a ponytail if hair is short), ready to learn. Girls should wear a solid colored leotard, black or pink tights and pink ballet slippers. Boys should wear a white shirt, black leggings, and black ballet slippers. If a dancer does not follow the dress code they will not be able to participate in class time.

For dancers ready to explore the intricacies of Ballet technique and enjoy the art of Ballet.  We will work on glissades, balancés, sous-sus, echappé sauté to second and back to fifth, entrechat-quatre, pas de chat, pique turns, chaines, sauté in first arabesque position, promenade in first arabesque, turn from fifth position, body facings with port de bras, arm movements through low first to middle and up high, plus an understanding of first, second and third arabesque arm lines, waltzes. Dancers should arrive to class on time with their hair up in a tight bun (or a ponytail if hair is short), ready to learn. Girls should wear a solid colored leotard, black or pink tights and pink ballet slippers. Boys should wear a white shirt, black leggings, and black ballet slippers.  If a dancer does not follow the dress code they will not be able to participate in class time.

Ballet 3B  (11+ yrs) w/ Donna

For dancers ready to explore the intricacies of Ballet technique and enjoy the art of Ballet.  This class will work at a faster pace than the previous level and dancer etiquette is required at the highest level. We will work more on glissade, sous-sus, echappe jumps to second and back to fifth, entrechat-quatre, pas de chat, pas de bouree en tournament, sissonne,  pique turns, chaines, sauté in first arabesque position, transition steps, promenade in first arabesque, turn from fifth position, bourrée, arm movements through low first to middle and up high, plus an understanding of first, second and third arabesque arm lines, waltz en tournament.  Dancers should arrive to class on time with their hair up in a tight bun (or a ponytail if hair is short), ready to learn. Girls should wear a solid colored leotard, black or pink tights and pink ballet slippers. Boys should wear a white shirt, black leggings, and black ballet slippers. If a dancer does not follow the dress code they will not be able to participate in class time.

Ballet 4/5  (13+ yrs) w/ Jenny

Emphasis will be placed on strengthening the center of the body in preparation for beginning pointe work. Class exercises will be practiced with performance skills in mind at all times. Dancers must have a strong knowledge of Ballet vocabulary, technique, and placement. Combinations will be learned quickly and executed at performance levels. Level 5 students will begin pointe work at the recommendation of the instructor. Students are expected to take all classes in their level.Dancers should arrive to class on time with their hair up in a tight bun (or a ponytail if hair is short), ready to learn. Girls should wear a solid colored leotard, black or pink tights and pink ballet slippers. Boys should wear a white shirt, black leggings, and black ballet slippers. If a dancer does not follow the dress code they will not be able to participate in class time.

 Ballet Beg/Int  (11+ yrs) w/ Mercedes

Beginning and intermediate Ballet students will build strength, flexibility, proper alignment, musicality, and learn French terminology for steps and positions. There will be barre, center, adagio, petit allegro, balances, pirouettes from fourth and fifth, across the floor. Steps will include sous-sus, releve, saute, changema, echape jumps, pas de chat, glissade, cabriole, spring pointes, sissonne, assemble, temps leve, sashe, pau de bureau, arabesque, bouree, pique without and with turns, chaines, and grand jete. Repertory can include short and simplified variations from Swan Lake, The Nutcracker, and Paquita. Girls should wear a solid colored leotard, black or pink tights and pink ballet slippers/hair tightly pulled back in a bun or ponytail. Boys should wear a white shirt, black leggings, and black ballet slippers. If a dancer does not follow the dress code they will not be able to participate in class time.

Pre Pointe* (9+ yrs) w/ Mercedes
*subject to the approval of the instructor

Pre Pointe Requirements:

1. Consecutively taking Ballet for 3 years

2. Take at least 3 or more Ballet classes per week

3. Take Ballet seriously

Pre-Pointe class is done in soft ballet shoes and bare feet, not on pointe. This is a pointe preparation class for serious ballet students interested in dancing en pointe. This class will focus on strengthening, stretching, and aligning the body with exercises for the metatarsals, arches, ankles, calfs, legs, core, and back. Floor work will include Floor Barre, Pilates, and Thera-band to engage the correct muscles. A portion of this class will be spent at the barre doing repetitious strength building exercises. This gives the teacher the opportunity to watch for technical problems that can be corrected before the dancer is placed in pointe shoes.  Pre-pointe class is required for a minimum of 1-2 years before being considered for for advancement to go en Pointe.

Attire and Tools: Wear pink ballet slippers, convertible pink tights, black leotard, and hair in a neat ballet bun with pins and hair net. Bring a Thera-Band, tennis ball, and optional ballet notebook and pencil to write down corrections/exercises.

Contemporary 1 (8+ yrs) w/ Molly

This class will be an introduction to floor work, inversions, finding momentum in movement, gaining choreographic tools, creating an awareness of our bodies and the ability to listen to them and follow sensation. We will do this through improvisation, technique exercises, phrases in the center, across the floor movement, and choreographic labs.  Dancers are required to wear solid colored leotards & black leggings, bare feet/hair tightly pulled back in a bun or ponytail. 

Contemporary 2 (10+ yrs) w/ Molly

This class will be a beginning level class which will include finding momentum in movement, opening up to our 3-dimensional bodies, floor-work, inversions, and the interplay between using muscle and finding softness in dancing. We will utilize improvisation to discover our own voice and creative force from within as well as to explore different textures, qualities, and possibilities of movement. We will tap into the felt experience and find ways to follow our own sensation in the moment. We will gain choreographic tools and practice sharing our own stories through our choreographic choices. Dancers are required to wear solid colored leotards & black leggings, bare feet/hair tightly pulled back in a bun or ponytail. 

Contemporary 3 (12+ yrs) w/ Molly

This class will be for the more experienced dancer and a further exploration into finding momentum in movement, opening up to our 3-dimensional bodies, floor-work, inversions, and the interplay between using muscle and finding softness in our dancing. We will utilize improvisation to discover our own voice and creative force from within as well as to explore different textures, qualities, and possibilities of movement. We will move into more choice based movement where we will get out of our patterns and habitual ways of moving. Contemporary 4 (14+ yrs) w/ Molly

This will be an advanced level class where we will use movement, breath and imagery to arrive in the space, into sensation and availability of our bodies. We will find way to utilize our whole bodies through technique phrases in the center and improvisation. We will move into more choice based movement where we will get out of our patterns and habitual ways of moving. We will tap into the felt experience and find ways to follow our own sensation in the moment. The movement phrases will be advanced and rigorous as we will continue to build on our skills of momentum, floor work, inversions, and full bodied movement. We will continue to utilize our choreographic tools and explore ways in which we can integrate all the things we’ve done in class so far to create full bodied, self expressive, and thoughtful dances. Dancers are required to wear solid colored leotards & black leggings, bare feet/hair tightly pulled back in a bun or ponytail. 

Contemporary 5 (15+ yrs) w/ Molly 

This is the most advanced level contemporary class for the experienced and pre-professional dancer. We will use movement, breath and imagery to arrive in the space, into sensation and availability of our bodies. We will find way to utilize our whole bodies through technique phrases in the center and improvisation. There will be more of an emphasis on improvisational scores where the dancer will work on their listening body, confident choice making, authentic and conscious movement as well as their partnering and contact skills.  We will tap into the felt experience and find ways to follow our own sensation in the moment. The movement phrases will be advanced and rigorous as we will continue to build on our skills of momentum, floor work, inversions, and full bodied movement as well as the intuitive body where the dancer can move away from the idea of right and wrong and move into the idea of meeting each moment exactly where they are so they can feel what they are doing and let that shine through. We will continue to utilize our choreographic tools and explore ways in which we can integrate all the things we’ve done in class so far to create full bodied, self expressive, meaningful and thoughtful dances. Dancers are required to wear solid colored leotards & black leggings, bare feet/hair tightly pulled back in a bun or ponytail.

Contemporary Jazz 1 (10+ yrs) w/ Angela

In this Beginning level class, students will explore contemporary dance through the foundations of jazz technique. This class is an introduction to the basics of jazz and contemporary techniques, including: inversions, leaps and jumps, kicks, core strength and improvisation. By offering unique choreography and technique adapted from the traditional form of the style, this class will allow dancers to use their technical training as a tool to develop and expand their relationship to stylized movement. With a warm up designed to stretch and strengthen, dynamic center and floor work, and progressions across the floor, dancers will be fully prepared for the end of class choreography section. Choreography will cover the basics of jazz technique but will have contemporary elements incorporated throughout.

Contemporary Jazz 2 (13+ yrs) w/ Angela  

In this beginning/Intermediate level class, students will explore contemporary dance with the foundations of jazz technique. This level is for dancers who have previously had technique classes and want to jump back in, or for teens who are natural movers but desire technical refinement. By offering unique choreography and technique adapted from the traditional form of the style, this class will allow dancers to use their technical training as a tool to develop and expand their relationship to stylized movement. With a warm up designed to stretch and strengthen, dynamic center and floor work, and progressions across the floor, dancers will be fully prepared for the end of class choreography section. Choreography will cover the basics of jazz technique but will have contemporary elements incorporated throughout.

Contemporary Jazz 3 (13+ yrs) w/ Angela  

In this Intermediate level class, students will explore contemporary dance with the foundations of jazz technique. This class is designed for far dancers who are on the cusp of reaching the advanced level but require more technical refinement, guidance in releasing old habits, and the extra push and support in reaching goals before leveling up. By offering unique choreography and technique adapted from the traditional form of the style, this class will allow dancers to use their technical training as a tool to develop and expand their relationship to stylized movement. With a warm up designed to stretch and strengthen, dynamic center and floor work, and progressions across the floor, dancers will be fully prepared for the end of class choreography section. Choreography will cover the basics of jazz technique but will have contemporary elements incorporated throughout.

Contemporary Jazz 4 (15+ yrs) w/ Angela  

In this Intermediate/Advanced level class, students will explore contemporary dance with the foundations of jazz technique. This class is for dancers who have taken all previous levels, or equivalent, have a solid understanding and practice of jazz and contemporary techniques, and are ready to challenge and push the limits. By offering unique choreography and technique adapted from the traditional form of the style, this class will allow dancers to use their technical training as a tool to develop and expand their relationship to stylized movement. With a warm up designed to stretch and strengthen, dynamic center and floor work, and progressions across the floor, dancers will be fully prepared for the end of class choreography section. Choreography will cover the basics of jazz technique but will have contemporary elements incorporated throughout.

Creative Dance for Ages 5 – 7  w/ Heather

This gender neutral class is designed for the student who is ready to participate in class on his or her own. Creative Dance in the Wilder classroom is a precursor to Modern / Contemporary / Lyrical Dance and there is a lot of movement exploration with plenty of time for the dancer to freely express his / herself through the art of dance. Stretches, dance technique, and learning choreography are all broken up with free dance time and dance games in-between. This makes the whole dance experience a lot of fun while learning. Modern Expressive for ages 8 – 11  w/ Heather

In Modern Expressive Dance, we focus on Modern / Contemporary / Lyrical technique while continuing to delight in the joy of dance. Free movement is given a framework and dancers are offered guidance in adding dynamic elements to their personal dance style. Students are encouraged to bring their favorite music to class for free dance periods. One of the greatest joys of dance is moving to music that you love! Stretching, dance technique, freedom of movement and learning choreography are all a part of class. Note: This class will not participate in evaluations.

Modern Expressive for ages 12+  w/ Heather

In this class for the slightly older dancer, we continue to expand upon our Modern / Contemporary / Lyrical technique while keeping our focus on the joy we find in dance. In this age group, we bridge the delicate balance between creating a stress free, accepting dance environment while at the same time, striving to be the best dancers we can be. Once more, free movement is given a framework and dancers are offered guidance in adding dynamic elements to their personal dance style and students are still encouraged to bring their own music to class for free dance periods.  Jazz 1  (5+ yrs) w/ Kari

We will cover the basics of Jazz technique. Step touch’s, step kicks, 3 step turns, boogies, and pivots are just some of the curriculum steps. Simple turns and battement kicks will be added as well as across the floor combos. Choreography will include facial theatrics and some intricate stage formations. Timing, rhythm and the 8 count will be focused on. Dancers are required to wear solid colored leotards & black leggings, jazz shoes (preferably black) / hair tightly pulled back in a bun or ponytail. 

Basic Vocab: Isolations, parallel positioning, flexibility (jazz splits and splits all sides) jazz squares, pas de bourrees, chasses with correct arm placement, grande battements, passes, jazz pirouette, chaines, intro to grande jetes

Jazz 2  (7+ yrs)  w/ Charleigh

We will continue to add on the foundations of Jazz. Stretching, pirouettes, chaines turns, leaps and high kicks will be incorporated. More combinations and drills across the floor will help students utilize traveling, space awareness and choreography memorization. Jazz 2 will continue to build upon the basics, making sure students can perform variations of steps.  Dancers are required to wear solid colored leotards & black leggings, jazz shoes (preferably black) / hair tightly pulled back in a bun or ponytail.

Vocabulary- grande battements develope and jete, needles, penches, en dedan jazz turns, double pirouettes, intro to fouetes, axels, cleaning grande jetes intro to calypso, illusions

Jazz 3 (10+ yrs)  w/ Charleigh

We will cover all of the basics in both Jazz 1 and 2 and more but at a fast moving pace. Technique and center control is strongly implemented. Balance, coordination, rhythm, strength, and flexibility are strongly emphasized. A wide range of styles and music from other eras will be incorporated and will vary according to the week; Musical Theater jazz, stylized swing, jazz fusion (elements of jazz and rock) are a few examples which will be used both in across the floor combos and choreography. Dancers are required to wear solid colored leotards & black leggings, jazz shoes (preferably black) / hair tightly pulled back in a bun or ponytail.

This class is designed with an emphasis on building foundational dance technique, musicianship and counting skills, and fostering the creative joy of movement through improvisation. Dancers begin to learn body alignment, proper foot and arm placement, work on both flexibility and strength, balance, start to build a dance vocabulary, and are challenged in the practice of memorizing and then building on a sequence of movements. Before moving to the next level dancers will demonstrate proficiency in plie/releve walks, memorization of simple sequences, extension through legs and feet, turn out and parallel foot positions, and maintain proper classroom etiquette. Dancers should wear leotard/tank top and leggings, bare feet/hair tightly pulled back in a bun or ponytail.

Modern 2A  (7+ yrs) w/ Micha

Dancers become more precise in their technique with an emphasis on extensions, balances, jumps in 1st and 2nd position, and the coordination of the arms and head. Proper alignment and continued work on building strength and flexibility are developed and are critical to the more complex sequences that are given across the floor. Dancers continue to build their dance vocabulary and are encouraged to explore their own creativity through structured improvisation games. Before moving on to the next level dancers will demonstrate proficiency in triplets, extension through legs and feet, ability to count music accurately, memorization of longer sequences, turn out and parallel leg and foot positions, and maintain proper classroom etiquette. Dancers should wear solid colored leotard/tank top and leggings, bare feet/hair tightly pulled back in a bun or ponytail.

Modern 2B  (9+ yrs) w/ Micha

Dancers continue to build on their foundational technique as their alignment, carriage of the arms, and proper leg and hip placement is emphasized. Dancers are challenged with more complex variations in center and across the floor, and continue to add to their dance vocabulary. Leaps and jumps, counting different music patterns, and off-center balances are introduced, and a variety of dynamic qualities are explored through the use of improvisation. Before moving on to the next level dancers will demonstrate proficiency in triplet turns, proper execution of a variety of leaps and jumps, ability to count out a long musical phrase, demonstrate varied movement qualities. and maintain proper classroom etiquette. Dancers should wear solid colored leotard/tank top and leggings, bare feet/hair tightly pulled back in a bun or ponytail.

Modern 3 (10+ yrs) w/ Micha

With an emphasis on balance, strength, coordination and alignment, dancers will be introduced to ever more complex movement and sequences. Poly-rhythmic coordination in the body and in musicality will be explored as well as the use of a wider dynamic range. Before moving on to the next level dancers will demonstrate proficiency in multiple triplet turns, releve balances, proper placement in extensions and leaps, knowledge of technical dance terms, be able to create a 16-count movement phrase, and maintain proper classroom etiquette. Dancers should wear solid colored leotard/tank top and leggings, bare feet/hair tightly pulled back in a bun or ponytail.

Modern 4 (12+ yrs) w/ Micha

This is an intermediate level class for dancers with a strong technical foundation. Continuing to build on their ever expanding technical abilities, this class challenges dancers to a high level of precision and accuracy in the execution of movement and musicianship. Emphasizing balance, strength, flexibility, coordination, body conditioning and alignment, dancers will be given longer and more complex sequences of choreography with greater dynamic nuance. They will explore their own creative voice through the use of improvisation and choreographic exploration. Before moving on to the next level dancers will demonstrate proficiency in chaine turns, be able to energetically sustain a high intensity class, be able to create a dynamically rich 32-count movement phrase, and maintain proper classroom etiquette. Dancers should wear solid colored leotard/tank top and leggings, bare feet/hair tightly pulled back in a bun or ponytail.

Modern 5 (13+ yrs) w/ Micha

At this level dancers will explore how the precise use of energy can create accuracy in each movement. Dancers will get more detailed in the execution of movement as they continue to develop their strength, coordination, balance, flexibility, alignment and body conditioning. They will explore their own creative voice through the use of improvisation and choreographic exploration. Dancers are expected to demonstrate proper classroom etiquette. Dancers should wear solid colored leotard/tank top and leggings, bare feet/hair tightly pulled back in a bun or ponytail.

Modern 6 (15+ yrs) w/ Micha

At this advanced level dancers will add even more precision to their dancing, exploring how the precise use of energy can create accuracy in each movement. Dancers will get more detailed in the execution of movement as they continue to develop their strength, coordination, balance, flexibility, alignment and body conditioning.  Poly-rhythmic movements and counts, off center balances and turns, extended energetic sequences and sustained adagio sequences will push dancers to their highest potential.They will explore their own creative voice through the use of improvisation and choreographic exploration. Tap 1 (5+ yrs) w/ Lauren

Tap 1 introduces tappers to basic Tap knowledge. Dancers will be challenged in terms of tempo, musicality, and turning individual moves into tap combinations. Vocab ex: shuffles, stationary and traveling flaps, paddle rolls, 3 step turns, and heel digs. Dancers should wear leggings, tank/leotard, tap shoes, and hair tightly pulled back in a bun or ponytail.

Tap 2 (7+ yrs) w/ Lauren

Tap 2 is designed for tappers with a solid foundation of Tap vocabulary and technique. Dancers are now prepared to sustain an intermediate level. Dancers will be challenged in terms of tempo, musicality, and progression to more difficult combinations. Vocab ex: shuffle combos, hop shuffles, “Shirley Temples”, paddle rolls, traveling flaps, stationary flaps, and time steps. Dancers should wear leggings, tank/leotard, tap shoes, and hair tightly pulled back in a bun or ponytail.

Tap 3/4 (11+ yrs) w/ Lauren

With intermediate and seasoned tappers alike, this class is fast paced and both technically and creatively challenging. This advanced-intermediate class will challenge tappers to combine more intricate moves into longer combinations — while making sure all sounds are crisp and intentional. Vocab ex: wing preps to wings, toe stands, buffalos, paddle rolls, riffs, over-the-logs, and time steps. Dancers should wear leggings, tank/leotard, tap shoes, and hair tightly pulled back in a bun or ponytail.

Beginning Tap for Teens (13+ yrs) w/ Rachele

Beginning Tap for teens will introduce basic tap movements, terminology, the exploration of rhythms and sounds in a fun, energetic environment. Dancers will be challenged on speed, clean tap sounds, leg and ankle muscle strength, and technique combinations. Dancers should wear a leotard, black leggings, tap shoes and have their hair tightly pulled back in a bun or ponytail.

Teen Movement (13+ yrs) w/ Leela

Movement classes led by Leela Kalow  is a practice influenced by the work and philosophies of the Ido Portal method. In these classes students develop a generalist movement perspective; oriented towards growth and evolution across all fields and areas in life. 

This practice blends elements from several disciplines such as dance, gymnastics, martial arts, yoga and parkour. Students develop and refine linear and organic strength, mobility, coordination, physical intelligences and cultivate an awareness of a movement and an internal practice. The focus is to foster deep exploration in each individual no matter their skill level and to encourage creativity and play.
