Class Descriptions

It is very common for dancers to stay at the same level for two or three years before moving up.

 

 Ballet Mini Movers (3 – 5 yrs) w/Mercedes

This class introduces the child to music and dance, coordination, and spatial/motor skills. Gentle guidance helps the beginner develop rhythm, cooperation, playful creative dance, and basic ballet skills. The classes offer an atmosphere of fun within discipline so the children can gain a sense of accomplishment as well as exploring their love of dance and music.

Ballet 1 (5+ yrs) w/Mercedes

This class is suitable for beginners and will cover the fundamentals of classical ballet technique. The importance of strength, flexibility, rhythm, musicality, and memorization will be stressed. Basics of performing will be introduced. It is recommended that students have taken Pre Ballet but it is not required.

Ballet 2A (7+ yrs) w/Lizzie

For children that wish to enjoy what ballet has to offer.  We will be working on glissade, sous-sus, echape jumps to second and back to fifth, entrechat-quatre, pas de chat, pique turns, chaines, saute in first arabesque position, changement en tournant, promenade in first arabesque, turn from fifth position, bouree across the floor with pas de bouree in between, arm movements through low first to middle and up high.  We will devote time at the end of some of our classes to watch a video of spectacular dancers from around the world.  Dancers should arrive to class on time with their hair up in a tight bun (or a ponytail if hair is short), ready to learn. . Dancers should wear a solid colored leotard, black or pink tights and pink ballet slippers.If your child does not follow the dress code they will not be able to participate in class time.

Ballet 2B  (9+ yrs) w/Lizzie

For children wanting to learn more about ballet technique and enjoy the art of ballet.  We will work more on glissade, sous-sus, echape jumps to second and back to fifth, entrechat-quatre, pas de chat, pique turns, chaines, saute in first arabesque position, changement en tournant, promenade in first arabesque, turn from fifth position, bouree across the floor with sous tenu, arm movements through low first to middle and up high plus an understanding of first, second and third arabesque arm lines.  Dancers should arrive to class on time with their hair up in a tight bun (or a ponytail if hair is short), ready to learn. . Dancers should wear a solid colored leotard, black or pink tights and pink ballet slippers. If your child does not follow the dress code they will not be able to participate in class time.

Ballet 4  (13+ yrs) w/Lizzie

For older children wanting to gain more of a grasp of ballet technique. We will be occasionally watching videos together of the famous ballet dancers from around the world.  Also, we will be discussing the role of music in the art of dance. Dancers should arrive to class on time with their hair up in a tight bun (or a ponytail if hair is short), ready to learn. Dancers should wear a solid colored leotard, black or pink tights and pink ballet slippers. If your child does not follow the dress code they will not be able to participate in class time.

Ballet 5/Pointe (14+ yrs*) w/Lizzie

For skilled dancers that are looking to be challenged in their ballet technique. Technique will be as advanced as we can get!  There will be several opportunities to learn and perform new choreography for all dancers. There will be time dedicated to learning character movements used in classical full length ballets such as Spanish, Czardas and Mazurka dances. Dancers should arrive to class on time with their hair up in a tight bun (or a ponytail if hair is short), ready to learn. Dancers should wear a solid colored leotard, black or pink tights and pink ballet slippers. If your child does not follow the dress code they will not be able to participate in class time.

Ballet Company w/Lizzie

Ballet Company is for students that are in the high intermediate/advanced stage of their ballet class training and ready to add choreography and expression to their ballet roles.  The requirements are to have a rather good understanding of ballet technique and able to execute most steps at a high level. Each student will also be required to enroll in the 4 classes per week offered for Ballet 5. Instructor is open to evaluating any dancer that feels up to the challenge yet reserves the right to evaluate them in order to accept them into Ballet Company.  The instructor’s desire is to share the joy of dance roles and allow the dancer to learn to express the emotions that come up in all the ballet roles that will be covered during the year.

 Ballet Beg/Int (11+ yrs) w/Mercedes

Beginning and intermediate Ballet students will build strength, flexibility, proper alignment, musicality, and learn French terminology for steps and positions. There will be barre, center, adagio, petit allegro, balances, pirouettes from fourth and fifth, across the floor. Steps will include sous-sus, releve, saute, changema, echape jumps, pas de chat, glissade, cabriole, spring pointes, sissonne, assemble, temps leve, sashe, pau de bureau, arabesque, bouree, pique without and with turns, chaines, and grand jete. Repertory can include short and simplified variations from Swan Lake, The Nutcracker, and Paquita. Dancers should always come to class with hair in a bun, wearing pink tights, black leotard, and pink ballet slippers.

Contemporary 1 (8+ yrs) w/Molly

This class will be an introduction to floor work, inversions, finding momentum in movement, gaining choreographic tools, creating an awareness of our bodies and the ability to listen to them and follow sensation. We will do this through improvisation, technique exercises, phrases in the center, across the floor movement, and choreographic labs.  

Contemporary 2 (10+ yrs) w/Molly

This class will be a beginning level class which will include finding momentum in movement, opening up to our 3-dimensional bodies, floor-work, inversions, and the interplay between using muscle and finding softness in dancing. We will utilize improvisation to discover our own voice and creative force from within as well as to explore different textures, qualities, and possibilities of movement. We will tap into the felt experience and find ways to follow our own sensation in the moment. We will gain choreographic tools and practice sharing our own stories through our choreographic choices.

Contemporary 3 (12+ yrs) w/Molly

This class will be for the more experienced dancer and a further exploration into finding momentum in movement, opening up to our 3-dimensional bodies, floor-work, inversions, and the interplay between using muscle and finding softness in our dancing. We will utilize improvisation to discover our own voice and creative force from within as well as to explore different textures, qualities, and possibilities of movement. We will move into more choice based movement where we will get out of our patterns and habitual ways of moving. We will tap into the felt experience and find ways to follow our own sensation in the moment. We will continue to utilize our choreographic tools and explore ways in which we can integrate all the things we’ve done in class so far to create full bodied, self expressive, and thoughtful dances.

Contemporary 4 (14+ yrs) w/Molly

This will be an advanced level class where we will use movement, breath and imagery to arrive in the space, into sensation and availability of our bodies. We will find way to utilize our whole bodies through technique phrases in the center and improvisation. We will move into more choice based movement where we will get out of our patterns and habitual ways of moving. We will tap into the felt experience and find ways to follow our own sensation in the moment. The movement phrases will be advanced and rigorous as we will continue to build on our skills of momentum, floor work, inversions, and full bodied movement. We will continue to utilize our choreographic tools and explore ways in which we can integrate all the things we’ve done in class so far to create full bodied, self expressive, and thoughtful dances.

Contemporary Jazz Fusion (13+ yrs) w/Angela

In this intermediate level class, students will explore the foundations of jazz dance through a contemporary lens. By offering unique choreography and technique adapted from the traditional form of the style, this class will allow dancers to use their technical training as a tool to develop and expand their relationship to stylized movement. With a warm up designed to stretch and strengthen, dynamic center and floor work,  and progressional across the floor exercises, dancers will be fully prepared for the end of class choreography section. Choreography will cover the basics of jazz technique but will have contemporary elements incorporated throughout.

Dance Wilder – Creative Dance  (K – 1st grades)  w/Heather

This gender neutral class is designed for the student who is ready to participate in class on his or her own. Creative Dance in the Wilder classroom is a precursor to Modern / Contemporary / Lyrical Dance and there is a lot of movement exploration with plenty of time for the dancer to freely express his / herself through the art of dance. Stretches, dance technique, and learning choreography are all broken up with free dance time and dance games in-between. This makes the whole dance experience a lot of fun while learning. Note: This class will not participate in evaluations.

Dance Wilder – Modern Expressive Dance (2nd – 3rd grades) w/Heather

In Modern Expressive Dance, we focus on Modern / Contemporary / Lyrical technique while continuing to delight in the joy of dance. Free movement is given a framework and dancers are offered guidance in adding dynamic elements to their personal dance style. Students are encouraged to bring their favorite music to class for free dance periods. One of the greatest joys of dance is moving to music that you love! Stretching, dance technique, freedom of movement and learning choreography are all a part of class. Note: This class will not participate in evaluations.

In this class for the slightly older dancer, we continue to expand upon our Modern / Contemporary / Lyrical technique while keeping our focus on the joy we find in dance. In this age group, we bridge the delicate balance between creating a stress free, accepting dance environment while at the same time, striving to be the best dancers we can be. Once more, free movement is given a framework and dancers are offered guidance in adding dynamic elements to their personal dance style and students are still encouraged to bring their own music to class for free dance periods. “Mind Body Medicine, The Art of Self Care” *
   

This course is meant to help students ages 10-13 navigate the many layers of adolescence by introducing and exploring various levels of self-care tips and tricks. Including:

– A selection of artistic mediums as means for constructive expression & reflection (i.e. journaling & improvisation)
– Mindfulness techniques (i.e. meditation and yoga),
– Group discussions and open circles
– Supplemental resources (i.e. videos and articles about the brain and emotions, basic nutrition, importance of sleep, etc.),
– Accessible stress reducing and management tools
– Goal setting and time management guidance…and more.

By facilitating a safe and supportive space for students to find comfort, inspiration, answers, and connection, this class aims to foster resiliency and agency in our students through creative expression, individual teacher mentorship, and interpersonal connection.  Students will not only gain a solid foundation of self care skills, but they will also cultivate mutual connections and intimate relationships with their fellow company members. This is a critical aspect to healthy and positive development – especially in the dance community.

Hip  Hop 1 Boys (5+ yrs) w/Harold

Boys learn the art of Hip Hop skills and techniques. Progressions across the floor develop coordination and upper body strength needed to gain Breaking and Hip Hop fundamentals. Boys master personal expression in a fun, challenging, and high energy environment.

Hip  Hop 2/3 (7 – 13 yrs) w/Harold

Welcome to a world of self expression! Unleash it by expressing all that you are in the cypher. We will be developing strong, sharp movements mixed with technique and flow from Hip Hop culture. This class will focus on your growth as an artist with interactive choreography mixed with freestyle and battle tactics.

Jazz Contemporary Combo Beg/Int (11+ yrs)  w/ Mercedes

The first half of each class focuses on building strength, flexibility and coordination with an emphasis on understanding proper alignment. Each class starts with exercises from yoga, pilates, and foundational contemporary/ jazz exercises. There will be center exercises using floor work, across the floor, and drills for more complicated steps. The second half focuses on learning new vocabulary and choreographed phrases that focus on spatial awareness, musicality, and performance qualities. Improvisational strategies are an integral creative process that will seldomly be integrated. We will also aim to expand the potential of a dancer’s performative power and amplify stage presence to build more confidence.


List of concepts: Alignment, Musicality, Improv, Contraction, Release, Mirroring, Levels, Movement translations, and moving floor to standing/ standing to floor.

Jazz 1  (5+ yrs) w/Emily

We will cover the basics of Jazz technique. Step touch’s, step kicks, 3 step turns, boogies, and pivots are just some of the curriculum steps. Simple turns and battement kicks will be added as well as across the floor combos. Choreography will include facial theatrics and some intricate stage formations. Timing, rhythm and the 8 count will be focused on.

Basic Vocab: Isolations, Heel toe, Ball change/ Kick Ball change, Pivot Step, Jazz Passe, Low leg extensions, Arm extensions, Jazz Hands, Square Step (Box Step), Releve, Jazz Walks, Chasse, Skips, Intro to chene turns, Leaps, and more basic steps.

Jazz 2  (7+ yrs)  w/Emily

Will continue to add on the advanced foundations of Jazz. Stretching, pirouettes, chaines turns, leaps and high kicks will be incorporated. More combinations and drills across the floor will help students utilize traveling, space awareness and choreography memorization. Jazz 2 will continue to build upon the basics, making sure students can perform variations of steps.

Jazz 3 (10+ yrs)  w/Emily

Will cover all of the basics in both Jazz 1 and 2 and more but at a fast moving pace. Technique and center control is strongly implemented. Balance, coordination, rhythm, strength, and flexibility are strongly emphasized. A wide range of styles and music from other eras will be incorporated and will vary according to the week; Musical Theater jazz, stylized swing, jazz fusion (elements of jazz and rock) are a few examples which will be used both in across the floor combos and choreography.

Modern 1  (5+ yrs) w/Micha

This class is designed with an emphasis on building foundational dance technique, musicianship and counting skills, and fostering the creative joy of movement through improvisation. Dancers begin to learn body alignment, proper foot and arm placement, work on both flexibility and strength, balance, start to build a dance vocabulary, and are challenged in the practice of memorizing and then building on a sequence of movements. Before moving to the next level dancers will demonstrate proficiency in plie/releve walks, memorization of simple sequences, extension through legs and feet, turn out and parallel foot positions, and maintain proper classroom etiquette. Dancers should wear leotard/tank top and leggings, and be prepared to dance barefoot.

Modern 2A  (7+ yrs) w/Micha

Dancers become more precise in their technique with an emphasis on extensions, releve balances, jumps in 1st and 2nd position, and the coordination of the arms and head. Proper alignment and continued work on building strength and flexibility are developed and are critical to the more advanced sequences that are given across the floor. Dancers continue to build their dance vocabulary and are encouraged to explore their own creativity through structured improvisation games. Before moving on to the next level dancers will demonstrate proficiency in triplets, extension through legs and feet, ability to count music accurately, memorization of longer sequences, turn out and parallel leg and foot positions, and maintain proper classroom etiquette. Dancers should wear black leotard/tank top and black leggings, and be prepared to dance barefoot.

Modern 2B  (9+ yrs) w/Micha

Dancers continue to build on their foundational technique as their alignment, carriage of the arms, and proper leg and hip placement is emphasized. Dancers are challenged with more complex variations in center and across the floor, and continue to add to their dance vocabulary. Leaps and jumps, counting different music patterns, and off-center balances are introduced, and a variety of dynamic qualities are explored through the use of improvisation. Before moving on to the next level dancers will demonstrate proficiency in triplet turns, proper execution of a variety of leaps and jumps, ability to count out a long musical phrase, demonstrate varied movement qualities. and maintain proper classroom etiquette. Dancers should wear black leotard/tank top and black leggings, and be prepared to dance barefoot.

Modern 3 (11+ yrs) w/Micha

This is an intermediate level class for dancers with a strong technical foundation. With an emphasis on balance, strength, coordination and alignment, dancers will be introduced to ever more complex movement and sequences. Poly-rhythmic coordination in the body and in musicality will be explored as well as the use of a wider dynamic range. Before moving on to the next level dancers will demonstrate proficiency in multiple triplet turns, releve balances, proper placement in extensions and leaps, knowledge of technical dance terms, be able to create a 16-count movement phrase, and maintain proper classroom etiquette. Dancers should wear black leotard/tank top and black leggings, and be prepared to dance barefoot.

Modern 4 (12+ yrs) w/Micha

Continuing to build on their ever expanding technical abilities, this class challenges dancers to a high level of precision and accuracy in the execution of movement and musicianship. Emphasizing balance, strength, flexibility, coordination, body conditioning and alignment, dancers will be given longer and more complex sequences of choreography with greater dynamic nuance. They will explore their own creative voice through the use of improvisation and choreographic exploration. Before moving on to the next level dancers will demonstrate proficiency in chaine turns, be able to energetically sustain a high intensity class, be able to create a dynamically rich 32-count movement phrase, and maintain proper classroom etiquette. Dancers should wear black leotard/tank top and black leggings, and be prepared to dance barefoot.

Modern 5 (14+ yrs) w/Micha

At this level dancers will explore how the precise use of energy can create accuracy in each movement. Dancers will get more detailed in the execution of movement as they continue to develop their strength, coordination, balance, flexibility, alignment and body conditioning. They will explore their own creative voice through the use of improvisation and choreographic exploration. Dancers are expected to demonstrate proper classroom etiquette. Dancers should wear black leotard/tank top and black leggings, and be prepared to dance barefoot.

Tap 1 (5+ yrs) w/Emily

Tap 1 introduces tappers to a basic tap knowledge. Dancers will be challenged in terms of tempo, musicality, and progression to more difficult combinations. Vocab ex: shuffle combos, heel rolls, flaps, #’s, stationary flaps, 77337, 3 step turns, pivot turn with flaps.

Tap 2  (8+ yrs) w/Emily

Tap 2 is designed for  tappers with a solid foundation of Tap vocabulary and technique. Dancers are now prepared to sustain an intermediate level. Dancers will be challenged in terms of tempo, musicality, and progression to more difficult combinations. Vocab ex: shuffle combos, heel rolls, flaps, #’s, stationary flaps, 77337, 3 step turns, pivot turn with flaps.

Tap 3/4 (10+ yrs) w/Emily

With intermediate and seasoned tappers alike, this class is fast paced and both technically and creatively challenging. Tappers advance into a true advanced-intermediate class where sloppy feet just won’t’ slide. Vocab ex: wing preps to wings, toe pops, buffalos, trains, paddle and roll, heel drops, riff preps to riffs.

West African Dance for Teen/Adult (13+ yrs)  w/Naby

Naby Bangoura’s dynamic skills and soaring spirit have established his dance class as a high energy experience that has long been a tradition in the Bay Area. Accompanied by live drumming, Naby’s  authentic presence and dynamic teaching style convey the spirit of his culture with skill, inspiration, and joy! Teen and Adult students of all levels and abilities will experience the traditional rhythms, dances, and songs of Guinea. They will also explore Guinean culture through West-African rhythms.
